I used to go with mechanics, things to help out the party, and in the beginning general power gaming. Mechanically, some are absolutely better than others, but there is not a single class/subclass that won't find good use. There isn't a single class/sublcass in 5e that is not useful. Go with whatever YOU like flavor wise, that makes sense for your character. All I am trying to convey with this post is a different viewpoint on the subject, and how I like to do things these days! I am also not saying you should do what I am about to suggest below. I am not saying my opinion is right, another person's opinions are wrong, and that choosing your subclass based on your party's makeup is wrong.
